Georgia parents can make an impact through stepparent adoption

With the month of June comes the celebration of Father’s Day and time spent with family and friends. Through adoption, many children are able to celebrate this holiday with their adoptive families. While people often think of domestic and international adoption of a child they do not know, stepparent adoption is another option that can be life changing, as well. Georgia family lawyers can provide guidance to families pursuing adoption.

A 23-year-old woman made the decision that she wanted to officially share the last name of the man she has called “Dad” for most of her life. Although she already goes by his last name, she wanted to finish the legal paperwork prior to her graduation from college, when she will walk across the stage with his last name. All that is left for them to do is sign the paperwork.

As an adult, this woman presented adoption papers to her stepdad as a Father’s Day gift. He was overcome with emotion and speechless because of the gift that she had given him. This adoptive father has been a part of her life for as long as she can remember, and now they will share an even closer bond. The whole family is overjoyed that they will all officially share the same last name.

Adoption does not look the same for each child or the parents involved in the process. However, it does leave a lasting impact on everyone who is able to be a part. Those in Georgia who are interested in adopting a child —  whether it be domestic, international or stepparent adoption — have a variety of resources available to them. Additionally, family law lawyers can provide guidance as the prospective adoptive parents navigate through the process.
