Shared child custody growing in Georia divorces

Determining a child custody arrangement can be challenging for some parents going through a divorce. The idea of spending less or minimal time with one's children is heartbreaking for most parents. Those in Georgia who are attempting to create a child custody arrangement have a vast array of resources available to them.

Shared parenting has become an increasingly popular form of child custody for many divorcing couples. This arrangement allows children to spend quality and nearly equal time with each parent. There has been a great deal of research that documents how beneficial this type of agreement can be.

While shared custody is good for children's overall well-being in most cases, each situation is unique. Some states are passing bills and laws that encourage judges to consider joint custody before alternate options. A number of fathers are hoping for this change, because it seems that mothers are still given primary custody after divorce . Shared custody would allow fathers the opportunity to play a more involved role in the lives of their children.

The custody agreement for each family is unique to their particular situation. Those divorces that result from an abusive spouse may not be very conducive to this type of child custody agreement. However, for those parents who are willing to work together in the best interest of their children, joint custody can be a great option. A Georgia family law professional can help a parent facing these issues decide what custody option is the best for his or her particular circumstances.
