Reducing car crash risks in 5 steps

In 2018, there were some 40,000 car crash fatalities across the U.S. Add to that the 4.5 million who were injured in car crashes, and one has a good reason to practice safer driving. There are some safety tips that Georgia motorists can benefit from.

It all begins with vehicle maintenance. Drivers should especially keep the brakes and the engine well-maintained. There should be no electrical issues, and the airbags should be intact. Second, if drivers intend to drink at a party or other gathering, they may want someone to take them home. Drinking and driving is out of the question; it is not only illegal but deadly, killing around 10,000 people every year in this country.

Third, drivers must stay away from their phones. Talking on a hands-free device is acceptable. The fourth tip, which is related to the third, is that drivers should always keep at least one hand on the steering wheel, using both hands for sharp turns and other maneuvers. When using a phone, drivers instinctively take their hands off the wheel.

Finally, it's essential for drivers to be patient and courteous. If stress gets the better of them, they may be involved in a red-light running crash, a fender bender or perhaps an incident of road rage.

These are just a few of the most common factors in car wrecks today. Occupants of other vehicles who are injured in a collision that is caused by a drunk, distracted, or otherwise negligent motorist often require medical care and treatment. They might want to have the help of an attorney when seeking compensation for their hospital bills and other losses.
