The number of foster children is at an all-time high.  The number of children in the foster care system in Georgia in May reached 15,000 for the first time. That number has since decreased slightly to around 14,900. The state is looking at different options to further reduce the number. One of these options is adoption.

It is widely thought that it is best for a child to be with family. The state is currently working with DCFS (Division of Child and Family Services) to keep children in the home when possible or with other family members if the home situation is deemed unsafe. One factor driving the increase is the ongoing opioid drug crisis. In addition, the state added a 24-hour crisis hot line that makes it easier to report suspected cases of neglect or abuse.

While being with family is best, it is not always possible. Being placed in the foster care system can be a very traumatic experience for a child. If the child cannot be placed with family, the next best option is a foster family that may eventually lead to adoption. Adopting through the foster system can be a faster and less costly option than an agency one.

A family looking to grow through adoption in Georgia may want to explore the option of adopting through the foster care system. Consulting with a family law professional can assist a family with understanding and navigating the process. There are many children waiting and eager to become part of a loving family.
