The possible hazards of drowsy driving

On Behalf of | Sep 12, 2021 | Car Wrecks |

There could be a multitude of scenarios in which drivers in Georgia and elsewhere might begin to feel the effects of fatigue while behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. Unfortunately, even a momentary bout with drowsiness could cause a driver to veer off course and create a dangerous situation. Knowing how to spot the signs of fatigue and the risks of driving while drowsy could prove integral to promoting safety and reducing the chances a dangerous car accident might occur.

Fatigue can affect one’s driving capabilities in various ways and some of the possible hazards of drowsy driving may include:

  • Issues with lane control:  Studies indicate that those who struggle with fatigue may be more likely to drift in and out of lanes, which can be dangerous under any circumstance.
  • Inadequate spacing:  Drowsy drivers may also find it more difficult to practice proper spacing and thus may struggle to react to sudden changes in traffic patterns.
  • Response times:  Fatigue can also disrupt one’s ability to react to circumstances in a timely manner, which is an essential component to safe driving.
  • Disruption of vision:  Drowsiness and fatigue can also affect one’s vision and ability to track other vehicles and objects.

While those who wish to promote a safer driving experience may be able to take certain steps to stave off such hazards, they might not always be able to rely on others to do the same.

Should the actions of a drowsy driver cause a car accident, the safety of everyone involved may be placed at risk. Individuals in Georgia who suffer serious or long-term injuries in such an incident could be left facing various life hardships and a long road to recovery. Following such an experience, those in search of answers on their available legal avenues could benefit from consulting with an attorney in Georgia for guidance on their options and on the next steps to take.
