Being accused of driving while under the influence of alcohol can be stressful under any scenario. While allegations alone could be enough to diminish one’s reputation, a conviction for similar offenses carries severe penalties that could impact various aspects of one’s life. A Sheriff’s deputy in Georgia may be in search of advice on his options after a recent traffic stop for speeding has left him facing DUI charges.

Traffic stop

Reports indicate that the incident began when authorities claimed to have encountered a driver who was traveling well above the posted speed limit. After authorities attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver allegedly proceeded to flee, leading to a brief pursuit that they say reached speeds of up to 120 mph. They assert that the driver struggled to maintain lane control during this time and say they were eventually able to pull the vehicle over and confront the driver.

During the traffic stop, authorities claim they caught a strong scent of alcohol emanating from the vehicle and state the driver exhibited numerous signs of impairment. Reports indicate field sobriety tests were conducted, and the man was taken into custody soon thereafter. He is now facing several charges in relation to the incident and has already been placed on administrative leave from his position as a deputy with a Sheriff’s department.

What next?

Individuals who face DUI charges might not always understand their legal rights and available options or the next steps to take to prepare for what comes next. Fortunately, one does not have to face such a process alone, as there are attorneys in Georgia who can evaluate the charges and evidence against a person and provide insight on the best course of action with which to proceed. An attorney can help a client prepare to make informed decisions about the situation and help create a strategy with which to seek the best outcome possible regarding his or her future during subsequent court proceedings.
