Increasing safety when driving on wet roads

On Behalf of | Nov 10, 2023 | Car Wrecks |

Driving through rainy weather on wet roadways can be challenging and stressful. Recent data from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration suggests that wet roadways are a factor in over a million car accidents every year in Colorado and throughout the country. Here are some wet-weather driving strategies to help motorists avoid car accidents and arrive safely to their destinations.

Prepare accordingly

Before heading out in the rain, be sure to make the right preparations. Make sure to get plenty of rest and have a clear mind before hitting the road. Also, examine the vehicle to ensure it is ready to handle the rain. Inspect windshield wipers and check tire inflation and tread.

Keep a safe following distance

Make sure to keep a safe following distance when the roads are wet. A good rule of thumb for drivers to remember is to keep a following distance of at least five seconds between their car and the vehicle they are following. This way there is enough space to avoid a crash if the lead vehicle has to suddenly stop.

Just slow down

The most important thing for drivers to remember in wet conditions is to just slow down. Driving too fast when roads are wet is a primary cause of weather-related accidents. Unfortunately, many drivers today are not as cautious or careful as they should be behind the wheel. Those in Colorado who have been injured in car accidents caused by the negligence of another party could get help by speaking with an experienced legal professional. Damages from a successful claim could help victims pay medical expenses and recover lost wages.
