More divorces are filed in January than in other months

On Behalf of | Dec 23, 2023 | Divorce |

Divorces in Georgia and other states often follow trends, especially when it comes to the month in which couples choose to file for divorce. January is the most popular month for divorce filings. Understanding the reasons behind this may help some couples decide on whether they want to file for divorce after the holidays.

Why are there more filings in January?

The holidays are a stressful time for many families, and this stress is only amplified if one is in an unhappy marriage. When a couple is uncertain about filing for divorce, they may try to make it through the holidays to see if the relationship is salvageable. Staying together through the holidays is common for couples with minor children. Once the holidays are over, one or both parties may realize that the marriage is not worth saving.

Many people go into the new year looking for a new start. When one is in an unhappy marriage, that new start can mean filing for divorce. There is no right or wrong time to file for divorce once one is certain that the marriage is over. Counseling or therapy can help some couples resolve their issues and decide to stay together. However, in other cases, both parties realize that divorce is the right decision.

Seek help when filing for divorce

Georgians who have decided to file for divorce can benefit from working with an experienced family law attorney. Divorce brings about many life changes and requires one to make decisions that will impact one’s future. By working with an attorney, one can better understand how the process works and feel more prepared for life after the divorce is finalized.
